How the calculator works
Costs
Each cost line starts from today's published figure and grows every year with its own price rise: tuition and university fees with the fee increase for that country and course, living costs with the living-cost increase. Each study year is paid when it starts; one-time costs fall in the first year.
Savings
Savings are paid at the end of each year and grow at your assumed return. The yearly saving shown is the smallest amount that never lets the fund run out in any study year. If a child starts college before any saving is possible, the amount needed now is shown separately.
Sources
University fees are averaged only across comparable courses: same country, course, fee type (local or international) and currency, after adjusting each fee to the same year. Every figure shows its source, and estimates are labelled "Estimated — please review".
